Verify a Waste Hauler Before You Sign

There is no single national license number for a waste hauler. What you can verify today is its RCRA handler status (Transporter and/or TSDF) on US Waste Index, its FMCSA DOT registration directly with FMCSA if it operates trucks, and its state-level hauling or transporter license directly with that state — the last of which US Waste Index does not yet track.
There's no one 'waste hauler license' to look up
Unlike, say, a contractor's license, waste hauling isn't governed by one national registry. A single company can be simultaneously registered as an EPA RCRA Transporter (federal, hazardous waste only), FMCSA-registered under a DOT number (federal, if it operates commercial trucks), and separately licensed by one or more states to haul waste on public roads. None of these three is a substitute for the other two.
What US Waste Index can verify: RCRA handler status
For hazardous waste specifically, US Waste Index shows whether a company's facility holds an active Transporter and/or TSDF (Treatment, Storage, and Disposal Facility) classification in EPA's RCRAInfo data — see our guide on the three RCRA handler roles. A Transporter classification means the facility is registered to move hazardous waste between sites; it does not by itself certify insurance, safety record, or non-hazardous-waste capability.
This only applies to hazardous waste. RCRA has no registry for a company's ordinary trash, recycling, or construction-debris hauling — those categories on US Waste Index are sourced from business listings, not a federal handler registry, and don't carry an equivalent permit-status field.
What FMCSA can verify: DOT registration
If a hauler operates commercial trucks across state lines (or in some cases within a state), it's required to register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and carry a DOT number. US Waste Index has matched FMCSA registration data for a subset of the companies in its database — where a match exists, it's shown on the company page. Where it isn't shown, that doesn't mean the company lacks a DOT number; it means US Waste Index hasn't matched one yet. For a definitive check, search the company name directly on FMCSA's own SAFER system.
What US Waste Index does not track: state hauler licensing
Most states separately require a permit or license specifically to transport solid or hazardous waste on public roads, issued by a state environmental or transportation agency — independent of both RCRA and FMCSA. US Waste Index does not currently ingest state-by-state licensing data, so a clean RCRA and FMCSA record on this site is not confirmation of current state licensure. Check directly with the relevant state agency before treating a company as fully verified.

Does US Waste Index verify a hauler's license?
It shows RCRA Transporter/TSDF status (hazardous waste only) and, for a matched subset of companies, FMCSA DOT registration. It does not currently track state-level hauling licenses.
Is Transporter status the same as a business license?
No — it's a federal RCRA registration specific to moving hazardous waste (not even a formal permit, unlike TSDF status), and it's unrelated to general business licensing or state transportation permits.
How do I check a hauler's FMCSA DOT number directly?
Search the company name or DOT number on FMCSA's own SAFER Company Snapshot system — US Waste Index's FMCSA match coverage is partial.
Where do I check state-level waste-hauling licensing?
