Why there's no published price on this site
US Waste Index's compliance data comes from EPA's ECHO/RCRAInfo extract, which tracks regulatory status and history, not commercial pricing — vendors set their own rates directly with generators, and no federal or state source publishes them centrally. Any guide claiming a fixed national average price for hazardous-waste disposal is estimating, not reporting a real, sourced figure — treat those numbers accordingly. What follows are the real factors that determine price, not a price itself.
Waste classification and generator size
A facility's RCRA generator size class — LQG, SQG, or VSQG, see our guide on the differences — reflects how much hazardous waste it produces per month, and drives both the paperwork burden and, generally, the per-unit handling cost: smaller, less frequent pickups typically cost more per unit than large, scheduled volumes. The specific waste stream matters too — a listed hazardous waste requiring specialized treatment or incineration costs more to manage than a characteristic waste that can go to a standard TSDF.
Quantity, frequency, and container type
Total volume and how often it's picked up both factor into pricing — a scheduled recurring pickup is typically priced differently than a one-time cleanout. Container and packaging requirements (drums, totes, bulk tankers) also affect cost, since they determine what handling equipment and DOT-required packaging the hauler needs.
Transport distance and disposal method
Distance from the generator to a permitted TSDF affects transport cost directly, and the number of TSDFs that can accept a specific waste stream varies by region — see a facility's location page for what's nearby. The disposal or treatment method itself (fuel blending, incineration, landfill, recycling/recovery) carries different costs, generally rising with the complexity of the treatment required to render the waste safe.
